Personal Insurance

Protect your home in a tough California market

California homeowners are facing nonrenewals, higher premiums and fewer insurers writing new policies, especially in foothill and wildfire-exposed areas. A local agent who knows the market can save you a lot of time.

Online quotes for home, auto and other personal coverage are prepared through the Bolt quoting platform. Some coverage and carrier options are quoted by phone. Selecting "Start a Personal Lines Quote" takes you to a third-party website that has its own privacy policy and terms. A quote is not a binder or a guarantee of coverage.

We shop your home with the insurers available to us and, when a standard policy is not available, we can place a California FAIR Plan policy paired with a Difference in Conditions (DIC) policy to fill the gaps.

What homeowners insurance can cover

Dwelling

Covers the structure of your home against covered perils such as fire, windstorm and certain water damage.

Other structures

Detached garages, fences, sheds and shops on your property.

Personal property

Furniture, clothing, electronics and other belongings, with special limits for jewelry and valuables.

Loss of use

Helps pay additional living expenses if a covered loss forces you out of your home.

Personal liability

Protects you if someone is injured on your property or you accidentally damage someone else's property.

Medical payments to others

Pays small medical bills for guests injured on your property regardless of fault.

Things to consider

  • Standard homeowners policies do not cover flood or earthquake. Flood coverage is available through the NFIP and private markets; earthquake coverage through the California Earthquake Authority and others.
  • Parts of the Yuba-Sutter region sit behind levees along the Feather, Yuba and Bear rivers, so flood coverage is worth discussing even if your lender does not require it.
  • Review your dwelling limit regularly. Rebuilding costs have risen significantly.
  • Wildfire mitigation such as defensible space and ember-resistant vents may help with eligibility or discounts with some insurers.

This is a general description, not a policy. Coverage, limits and exclusions vary by insurer and are governed by the policy actually issued.

Frequently asked questions

My insurer non-renewed my home. What now?

Call us as soon as you get the notice. We will check the admitted and non-admitted markets available to us, and if needed, set up a FAIR Plan policy with DIC coverage so there is no gap.

Does homeowners insurance cover wildfire?

Fire is a covered peril on standard homeowners and FAIR Plan policies. The question is usually whether an insurer will write the home, which is where we come in.

Is flood insurance required?

Your lender may require it if the home is in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area. Even outside those areas, flood is excluded from homeowners policies, so it is worth considering.
